Xi Jinping urges Beijing to hold Winter Olympics by using Chinese experience

The preparation work in the next five years will on one hand bring development opportunities for a coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and secure a parallel progress of China’s winter sports and public participation in sports undertakings as well.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged games organizers to prepare for an “extraordinary” Winter Olympic Games by using Chinese experience.

During his inspection tour in Beijing on Thursday and Friday, Xi visited Wukesong sports center, venue for the 2022 Winter Olympics ice hockey event, as well as the Capital Gymnasium, venue for short track speed skating and figure skating events.

Xi said that the preparation work for the games should embody Olympic spirit, urging that the construction of stadiums should follow a green, eco-friendly, clean-fingered principle.

Construction projects should not be extravagant, with their follow-up use taken into consideration, said Xi, adding that this event can be leveraged to bolster Chinese public’s engagement in sports undertakings.

This is not the first time for Xi to stress the preparation of the 2022 games. Xi, while inspecting the game venue in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province on January 23, ordered relevant departments and local governments to ensure high-quality preparation.

In a symposium held in the following day, he stressed that the construction plans must be strictly followed in an orderly and coordinated way, so as to ensure a high-quality event and promote the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

“The race has begun. Which project will start first and which one will be followed in the next? We should neither make false-start or delayed beginning,” he added.

When Beijing made the last bid presentation for the games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 31, 2015, Xi, in a video message, vowed that the Chinese people will present the world a fantastic, extraordinary and excellent event, establishing Beijing’s final success.

During his inspection on Friday, he was briefed the latest preparation efforts, including the cost, the proceedings as well as supporting activities.

“I watched your competition on TV. It’s brilliant,” Xi told Wu Dajing, who is the gold medalist of the 500-meter short track speed skating event in Asian Winter Games in Japan’s Sapporo. Xi encouraged Wu to prepare next year’s Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea and strive for greater harvests at the Beijing Games.

He presided over a symposium in Russian city of Sochi back in 2014 when attending the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics there, which was later described as a dialogue on Winter Olympics dreams.

Xi also paid a visit to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland in January. President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach told Xi he believed that the Beijing Winter Olympics will be an excellent one under the leadership of President Xi.

The preparation work in the next five years will on one hand bring development opportunities for a coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and secure a parallel progress of China’s winter sports and public participation in sports undertakings as well, organizers said.
