Chad has reaffirmed its commitment to regional stability from the rostrum of the United Nations General Assembly at its 81st session, expressing deep concern over escalating security and humanitarian challenges while issuing a firm warning against any violations of its national sovereignty.

Historic Humanitarian Pressure and Unwavering Neutrality

The plight of refugees and internally displaced persons took center stage in the official address. Since April 2023, more than one million Sudanese have crossed Chad's eastern borders fleeing conflict. Combined with other regional crises, N'Djamena now hosts over two million forcibly displaced individuals, translating to approximately one in every seventeen residents.

Addressing the Sudanese conflict, the government clarified its diplomatic stance. Speaking on behalf of the President of the Republic due to domestic agenda commitments, Dr. Abdel-Madjid Abdel-Rahim Mohamed, Minister of Public Health and Prevention, stated: "From the very first day of this war, my country has maintained a strict, absolute, and steadfast neutrality." He emphasized that Chad neither supports any faction nor permits the use of its infrastructure by warring parties, while reiterating support for the Quadripartite and Quintpartite initiatives aimed at securing a ceasefire.

A Firm Warning on Territorial Sovereignty

Nevertheless, the address adopted a notably firmer tone regarding territorial integrity. The government condemned "in the strongest terms" recent airstrikes in the Ennedi Est province directly linked to the Sudanese conflict. Terming these incursions an "unacceptable violation," N'Djamena warned that it reserves the right to take all necessary measures under international law should such incidents recur.

Climate Vulnerability, Sahel Security, and International Posturing

On the environmental front, Chad highlighted the extreme vulnerability of the Lake Chad basin, urging developed nations to fulfill their financial commitments regarding climate adaptation, resilience, and technology transfer.

Regarding security, the country continues to pay a heavy price in combating extremist groups across the Sahel while fulfilling its broader international responsibilities. The minister noted the recent deployment of 1,500 Chadian troops to Haiti as part of an anti-gang multinational force, cementing Chad's status as a leading African contributor to global peace operations.

Finally, addressing wider international affairs, Chad called for restraint and dialogue in the Gulf region while cautioning against retaliatory attacks. On the Middle East, N'Djamena reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people's right to statehood alongside Israel, alongside its traditional call for an end to the embargo against Cuba.
