Despite pulling back from its historic peaks, the gold market continues to command strong interest from central banks. According to a study by the BestBrokers research team, net monthly purchases reached 63 tonnes in September, returning to particularly high volumes.

Drawing on data from the World Gold Council and London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) prices as of mid-October 2026, the report highlights the accumulation strategy pursued by several countries since 2021 to diversify their reserves against economic and geopolitical instability.

China and Poland Lead the Acquisitions

Over the 2021–2026 period, China and Poland have vastly dominated global purchases. Each of these two nations has increased its reserves by more than 400 tonnes, standing at 438.2 tonnes and 419.3 tonnes, respectively. At current market prices, these holdings amount to approximately $58.7 billion for China and $56.2 billion for Poland.

India takes third place with 204 tonnes accumulated (valued at $27.3 billion), followed by Turkey (137.4 tonnes), Uzbekistan (106 tonnes), and Brazil (105.1 tonnes). Lower down the ranking, Japan, Thailand, and the Czech Republic also demonstrate a steady increase in their assets, hovering between 76 and 81 tonnes.

The trajectory of certain countries illustrates a clear shift in policy. Poland, once a marginal buyer, dramatically intensified its purchases starting in 2023, maintaining a sustained pace through 2024 and 2025 before reaching 97.8 tonnes in the first eight months of 2026 alone. The Czech Republic is following a similar dynamic, with its purchases for the January–to–August 2026 period already exceeding its total for the previous year.

A Quest for Strategic Independence

For Alan Goldberg, senior analyst at BestBrokers, this craze goes beyond simple financial management: "Gold has always held a special place in the architecture of national wealth: it is both a financial asset and a silent declaration of independence. For central banks navigating a world of shifting political alliances and swelling public debt, the bullion offers a reserve that rests outside the balance sheet of any other government."

The expert also notes that this persistence across economies with highly varied profiles reflects a search for autonomy in the face of external shocks, regardless of each state's specific motivations. It remains to be seen whether this appetite will hold up against rising prices, which mechanically drive up the cost of every additional tonne acquired.
