Le président Joseph Kasa Vubu s’est avant tout révélé au grand public comme dirigeant et président de l’Association des Bakongo (ABAKO), organisation culturelle au départ qui, peu à peu, s’est transformée en parti politique vers 1955. Au nom de l’ABAKO, Joseph Kasa Vubu s’est opposé au plan Joseph Van Bilsen, laquelle préconisait 30 ans de préparation de l’élite congolaise avant d’accéder à l'indépendance.
