L'Union Africaine condamne énergiquement les dernières attaques perpétrées par le groupe terroriste Boko Haram

AU welcomes regional efforts to fight against Boko Haram and renews its commitment to support

Addis Ababa, July 28, 2014: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, strongly condemns the cowardly attack perpetrated yesterday, July 27, 2014, by the terrorist group Boko Haram, against Cameroonian town of Kolofata, attack in which many people were abducted and killed several others. It expresses full solidarity of the AU with Cameroon and its people and its total support for the efforts of the Cameroonian authorities to prevent and combat such terrorist acts. At the same time, it reiterates the continued solidarity of the AU with Nigeria and its full support to the company by this country to deal with the campaign of terror and destruction that leads Boko Haram action.
 
The Chairperson of the Commission notes that the attack Kolofata, which follows similar incidents in northern Cameroon and prosecution of terrorist acts of Boko Haram in Nigeria, illustrate once again the seriousness of the threat that this group poses to regional security and stability. She welcomed the commendable efforts of the countries of the region to facilitate a coordinated and effective against Boko Haram action and encourages them to strengthen their cooperation.
 
The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the commitment of the AU to support the efforts of countries in the region as part of its overall fight against terrorism and transnational crime in Africa strategy. In this regard, she stressed that the Commission in consultation with the countries of the region on the monitoring of operational conclusions of the 5th Meeting of Heads of Intelligence Services and Security States of Sahel-Saharan region, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on 19 and 20 May 2014, in particular through the shipment on the ground of a technical assessment mission. This will be to discuss the situation and agree with all stakeholders in terms of an appropriate support of the AU to current actions, and particularly on the basis of the encouraging experience that constitutes the regional cooperation initiative for the elimination of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA-ICR), conducted under the authority of the AU with the support of international partners. It should be recalled that the operational conclusions of Ouagadougou, which provide a series of measures to strengthen the African action against the terrorist group Boko Haram, were welcomed by both the 436th meeting of the Council for Peace and Security, which held on 23 May 2014 by the 23rd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU, held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, June 26 to 27, 2014.
