Investment Enables Cataract Clinics in Angola and Rwanda

- 5 Mai 2016

NEW YORK, NY – May 3, 2016 – Angola Capital Investments (ACI), a leading international investment firm headquartered in Angola, supports the Barraquer Expeditions through its investment in Oshen Healthcare and Sphera Bluoshen. Oshen Healthcare and Sphera Bluoshen have partnered with the Barraquer Foundation to bring cataract clinics to Angola and Rwanda.

This year the Expeditions will take place June 11th through June 18th in Angola and July 23rd through July 30th in Rwanda. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cataracts are responsible for 51% of world blindness, affecting about 20 million people. Since 2014, more than 1,000 people in Angola and Rwanda have benefited from the Barraquer Foundation cataract surgical expeditions. The Barraquer Foundation provides eye treatment to populations in depressed areas of the world and is a part of the ophthalmology Barraquer Clinic of Barcelona.

The Foundation’s first expedition to Angola took place in July 2014. More than 250 people had eye surgery in 5 days and over 700 people were added to a waitlist for the following year. In November 2014 the Foundation traveled to Rwanda to perform more than 230 surgeries and provide more than 800 free ophthalmology consultations.

The 2015 expeditions were larger than the expeditions in 2014. Three teams of surgeons, including 2 top surgeons, operated on 523 people and diagnosed more than 1200 people in Angola.

“The first expeditions in Angola and Rwanda in 2014 were very successful; so successful that we decided to make it a yearly program,” said CEO Zandre Campos. “We work to bring the best healthcare to the people of Africa, and our partnership with the Barraquer Foundation is helping us achieve this mission.”
